About Pamela Jo

Pamela Jo Hatley grew up on a small family farm in the Appalachian foothills of rural north Alabama immersed in old time, bluegrass, gospel, and country music. Her favorite things are the great outdoors and earthy, rootsy, front porch music.

Pamela Jo is a lifelong musician and vocalist whose first instrument was her voice. She started singing at age five and began playing ukulele and later guitar in elementary school. She learned piano and bass guitar in high school, studied classical, jazz, and music theory in college, and later took up banjo and mandolin. If it has strings and frets, hammers and keys, or otherwise makes a musical sound, Pamela Jo considers it her kin.

Pamela Jo performs original compositions and the music of her youth, including traditional songs from deep in American history with English, Irish, and Scottish roots. Historical songs often have intriguing backgrounds, and Pamela Jo weaves storytelling into her musical performances to connect her audiences with the human context, facts, humor, and tragedy that inform the songs. Pamela Jo’s performances feature her strong vocals accompanied by acoustic instruments including banjo, guitar, mandolin, resonator guitar, and ukulele. Pamela Jo's music is both upbeat and chill, funny and serious, sometimes a sing-along, and never ordinary.

Pamela Jo performs at music venues and festivals throughout the southeastern U.S. and beyond. In 2025 she performed at a hand full of music venues in the west of Ireland with a well-known folk musician from County Cork.

Pamela Jo has won awards in women's vocals, group vocals, and banjo at the Florida Old Time Music Championship. She is a music instructor and has taught workshops in banjo and singing at the Florida Folk Festival and the Will McLean Festival. Pamela Jo teaches private banjo lessons in person and online.

You can hear Pamela Jo's music on all digital streaming platforms or see her live performances at music venues and festivals. Watch for upcoming shows! Hope to see you soon.

"Music is my vehicle of transcendence."  -Pamela Jo
